UNICEF Reports Alarming Spike in Newborn Deaths Amid Gaza Genocide

Gaza Herald – UNICEF data revealed a 75% surge in newborn deaths on their first day of life in Gaza, with 47 infants killed every month between July and September 2025, up from 27 per month before the Israeli occupation’s assault. The organization confirms 141 newborns died on the day of their birth in just three months, driven largely by severe maternal malnutrition.

The report also documents 1,380 infants who died while suffering from low birth weight, double the pre-war figure. Low-weight births have skyrocketed to 460 cases per month since July, compared to 250 before the genocide. UNICEF warns that infants born under 2.5 kg face 20 times higher risk of death, especially with Gaza’s health system systematically destroyed.

UNICEF further notes that 38% of pregnant women screened between July and September were diagnosed with acute malnutrition. A UN report recorded 6,000 children suffering from severe acute malnutrition in August alone, the highest rate since the beginning of the Israeli occupation’s war of annihilation.
