Gaza Herald – For thousands of displaced Palestinians in Gaza, the struggle for survival does not end with finding shelter. Inside overcrowded tents, families are now facing a growing threat from snakes, rodents, insects and other pests that have turned temporary shelters into unsafe living spaces.
With extreme summer heat, piles of accumulated waste, damaged sewage systems and the lack of proper sanitation, displacement camps have become fertile environments for the spread of rodents and reptiles. Many families say they are constantly forced to watch their children, food and belongings, fearing unexpected encounters with snakes or bites from dangerous insects.
Recent incidents, including a video showing a displaced man confronting a large snake inside his tent, have highlighted the daily reality faced by Gaza’s displaced population. Residents say such encounters are no longer rare, with snakes, rats and insects frequently appearing between tents and near sleeping areas.
Humanitarian agencies have warned that deteriorating environmental conditions in Gaza are increasing health risks. The combination of overcrowding, stagnant water, waste accumulation and damaged infrastructure has contributed to the spread of pests and raised concerns about infectious diseases, particularly among children, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems.
For families living in tents without proper protection, even basic daily activities have become a challenge. Food storage, sleeping, and caring for children are all affected by the constant presence of rodents and insects. Many residents say they spend nights awake, trying to protect their families from threats that have become part of their new reality.
As Gaza’s displaced families continue to wait for safer living conditions, the growing presence of snakes and rodents reflects another layer of the humanitarian crisis, where survival is not only about escaping genocide but also about enduring the harsh and unhealthy conditions that follow.
