Gaza Herald – As the Israeli war enters its third year, thousands of families in Gaza remain displaced, living beside the ruins of their homes or inside damaged buildings at risk of collapsing, while reconstruction efforts remain stalled amid ongoing restrictions and severe humanitarian conditions.
Many families have been forced to turn the rubble of their destroyed homes into makeshift shelters, waiting for reconstruction that has yet to begin. With building materials still scarce and millions of tons of debris covering neighborhoods, temporary displacement has become a prolonged reality.
One displaced mother said her family has spent nearly three years waiting for signs of recovery, but conditions continue to deteriorate as disease, rodents, and the destruction left by the war make daily life unbearable. She said the suffering has become so overwhelming that many people now “wish for death.”
Other families have returned to structurally damaged homes because they have nowhere else to go, despite cracked walls and ceilings that could collapse at any moment. Residents say they live in constant fear while enduring unsafe living conditions.
Municipal officials say reconstruction remains effectively frozen because essential equipment, machinery, and construction materials have not been allowed into Gaza, preventing even the early stages of recovery and debris removal.
The social impact has also been severe. Official figures show that, as of June 2026, more than 65,000 children in Gaza have been registered as orphans, while over 28,000 women have been registered as widows. More than 800 families have also been displaced again since the October 2025 ceasefire due to renewed military attacks and shrinking civilian areas.
With reconstruction at a standstill, thousands of Gaza’s families continue living in worn-out tents or among the ruins of their homes, waiting for the chance to rebuild their lives.
