Occupation Detains 43 Gaza Prisoners Past Sentences

Gaza Herald – The Prisoners’ Media Office stated that Israeli occupation authorities continue to detain 43 prisoners from the Gaza Strip inside their prisons despite the expiration of their actual sentence terms. The office highlighted that these individuals are held without legal justification amid a sharp deterioration in their physical and mental health conditions.

The office specified that among those detained is prisoner Ibrahim Al-Shaer, who has been held since 2015. He completed his ten-year sentence but his family lacks information about his status. There are growing concerns regarding his life due to significant weight loss he has experienced during his detention.

Another case mentioned is Mahmoud Ahmad, who was scheduled for release in September 2025. Instead, he was transferred to administrative detention and had his arrest renewed three consecutive times at Ramon prison. His continued imprisonment remains unresolved despite the passage of time.

The occupation continues to hold Muhammad Al-Qudwa at Nofech prison, even though his eleven-year sentence ended two years ago. His weight dropped from 75 to 57 kilograms. Additionally, he lost his daughter and several other family members during the war, compounding his suffering while still being held.

At the same facility, Ahmed Abu Al-Nour remains detained. He finished his two-year sentence more than two years ago. He has lost 48 kilograms of body weight and suffers from chronic illnesses. His prolonged detention persists despite the completion of his legal term.

Youssef Qarmout is another documented case. He completed his five-year sentence in June 2024 but remains forcibly disappeared. His family has lost 36 relatives during the conflict. They also do not know the fate of his son, Muhammad Yassin, adding to the uncertainty surrounding his situation.

The Prisoners’ Media Office emphasized that continuing to hold prisoners after their sentences expire constitutes a violation of international humanitarian law. They noted that replacing expired judgments with other detention procedures breaches international covenants concerning the rights of detainees.

The report underscores the ongoing legal and humanitarian issues faced by these individuals. Their families remain unaware of their well-being or exact locations within the detention system. The office calls attention to the lack of transparency and the severe impact on the prisoners’ health.
