Gaza Herald — The killing of Palestinian prisoner Thaer Sameeh Abu Asab has exposed disturbing details of the systematic abuse and fatal torture inflicted on Palestinian detainees inside Israeli prisons.
On Tuesday, Israel’s prosecution filed an indictment against 12 employees of the Israel Prison Service, charging them with causing Abu Asab’s death through reckless negligence and assaulting eight other Palestinian prisoners at Ktzi’ot Prison in November 2023, according to Israeli outlet i24.
The indictment, submitted by attorney Tal Cohen, names a shift commander who led the facility where the prisoners were being held, alongside prison guards, members of the Keter special unit, and dog handlers.
Assault Ordered Over a Question About the Gaza Ceasefire
According to the indictment, on November 18, 2023, Abu Asab asked a shift sergeant during the afternoon whether a ceasefire had taken effect in Gaza. The question was subsequently relayed to the shift commander.
That evening, before the daily prisoner count, the commander briefed the unit and explicitly cited Abu Asab’s query. He instructed his officers to enter the cell during the count in an unusual move intended to forcibly “demonstrate” to the prisoners that there was no ceasefire in Gaza.
Court filings reveal that the commander assured the officers he would take full responsibility for whatever occurred, while ordering female guards present at the briefing to stay away from the cell.
As detailed in the prosecution’s filing, the shift commander led his unit directly into the cell holding Abu Asab and eight other Palestinian detainees. After initiating the count, he ordered his team inside to assault the prisoners.
Guards systematically attacked the detainees with punches, kicks, and batons while the shift commander supervised the violence and personally struck multiple prisoners before withdrawing without reporting the attack.
Abu Asab Collapses and Dies
Shortly after the assault, Abu Asab collapsed and lost consciousness. He was moved to the prison clinic and subsequently transferred to Soroka Medical Center, where medical staff pronounced him dead.
Court documents confirm that the severe beating inflicted fatal injuries to Abu Asab’s heart and respiratory system, while the eight prisoners attacked alongside him sustained serious injuries. The fatal beating exposes the systemic torture, physical violence, and complete lack of oversight facing Palestinian detainees across Israeli facilities.
Attempts to Obstruct the Investigation
The prosecution’s filing further detailed deliberate efforts by prison staff to conceal the fatal attack.
According to the indictment, a shift sergeant instructed a guard to lie during questioning regarding the unit’s use of batons. A female guard initially provided false statements to investigators before later recanting her original account.
All 12 defendants face charges of causing death through recklessness, aggravated serious bodily injury, and multiple counts of causing bodily injury under aggravated circumstances. The shift commander and the shift supervisor face an additional charge of attempting to obstruct justice and interfere with an ongoing investigation.
Abu Asab’s death stands as an extreme example of the conditions reported inside Israeli detention centers, where physical abuse, torture, and severe guard misconduct remain rampant.
