Family Raises Alarm Over Possible Extension of Detention of Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya

Gaza Herald- The family of Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza, has expressed deep concern that his detention in Israeli custody may be extended once again, more than a year after his arrest.

In a statement, the family said they were alarmed by a notification from the Israeli Military Advocate General’s office requesting a further extension of his detention. A court hearing on the matter is scheduled for April 28, 2026.

Dr. Abu Safiya has been held in Israeli custody since December 2024 without formal charges or clear information regarding the grounds for his detention. According to his family, his lawyer has been denied access to him for more than two months, following his transfer to Ketziot Prison in the Negev (Naqab) region.

The family also cited reports indicating that he has been subjected to violence, significant weight loss, and medical neglect while in detention, raising serious concerns about his health and well-being.

Dr. Abu Safiya is among a group of medical professionals currently held in Israeli custody, including at least 13 physicians as well as dozens of nurses and paramedics. His case, according to his family and supporters, reflects broader concerns about the treatment of healthcare workers from Gaza.

They argue that the detention of medical personnel—many of whom were actively involved in treating the wounded—has further strained Gaza’s already overwhelmed healthcare system. Allegations raised include detention without trial, poor detention conditions, and limited access to legal and medical support.

The family has called for the immediate release of Dr. Abu Safiya and all detained medical staff, urging international organizations and the wider global community to intervene and ensure their protection under international law.

The upcoming court hearing is expected to determine whether his detention will be prolonged, amid growing calls for transparency and accountability regarding his case.
