Gaza Herald _Heartbreaking footage has captured emotional reunions as Palestinians who had been stranded in the occupied West Bank since the outbreak of Israel’s genocidal war in October 2023 finally returned to Gaza.
Among the most moving scenes was a young girl rushing to embrace her father as he stepped off a bus operated by the International Committee of the Red Cross. Their reunion was marked by tears, relief and an overwhelming sense of joy after years of separation.
In another scene, a Palestinian woman fell to her knees in prayer moments after stepping off the bus that had transported her from the Karem Abu Salem crossing into Gaza.
Other footage showed Palestinian journalist Yafa Abu Aker being reunited with her father. Both struggled to contain their tears as they embraced after years apart.
On Monday, the International Committee of the Red Cross announced a voluntary transfer and family reunification operation involving 74 people inside Gaza who had been separated from their families since the beginning of the war.
The ICRC said in a statement that, together with teams from the Palestinian Red Crescent, it transported the returnees from the Karem Abu Salem crossing to Nasser Medical Complex in Gaza.
“The Gaza they are returning to is completely different from the Gaza they left,” the organization said, noting that homes have been destroyed, loved ones lost and families torn apart.
Hundreds of Palestinians from Gaza became stranded in the occupied West Bank after the war began. Many had traveled there under Israeli permits for various reasons, including seeking medical treatment.
Thousands of other Gazans had been working inside Israel under special permits when the war erupted. Many were detained following the outbreak of hostilities and later transferred to the occupied West Bank.
For those now returning, the journey marks a long-awaited reunion with their families , but also a return to a Gaza transformed by years of war, destruction and displacement.
