Gaza Herald _Nearly 8,000 people in the Gaza Strip have lost limbs during the war, leaving thousands of survivors facing life-changing injuries, prolonged rehabilitation and an uncertain future, according to the head of Gaza’s Hamad Rehabilitation and Prosthetics Hospital.
Hamad Naim said the number of people who have undergone amputations has reached around 8,000, including women and children, as Gaza’s healthcare system continues to struggle under the scale of the injuries and destruction caused by the war.
Children account for about 25 percent of those who have undergone amputations, while women make up around 12.5 percent, Naim said.
For many survivors, losing a limb is only the beginning of a long and difficult journey. They require surgery, rehabilitation, psychological support and prosthetic limbs to regain mobility and rebuild their lives — services that remain severely limited in Gaza.
Naim said rehabilitation centers are facing critical shortages of medical supplies, prosthetic equipment and specialized medical teams, leaving many amputees without the care they need.
The growing number of people living with permanent disabilities has added another devastating dimension to Gaza’s humanitarian crisis, with children making up a significant share of those whose lives have been permanently altered.
Naim called on international and humanitarian organizations to urgently support Gaza’s rehabilitation centers and help provide prosthetic limbs, medical equipment, specialized personnel and essential rehabilitation services to those who have lost limbs during the war.
