Gaza Herald – The killing of journalist Mohammed Samir Washah, a correspondent for Al Jazeera Mubasher, has sparked widespread condemnation from media organizations, journalists’ unions, and Palestinian factions, all asserting that his targeting is part of a systematic effort to silence Palestinian voices and suppress the truth.
The Palestinian Journalists Syndicate strongly condemned Washah’s killing, stating that he was deliberately targeted while inside a civilian vehicle in central Gaza City. In a statement, the syndicate described the incident as a “full-fledged crime” and a “field execution of journalism and truth,” adding that it constitutes another entry in what it called Israel’s “black record” of violations. It emphasized that the attack was not incidental but reflects a clear policy of pursuing Palestinian journalists and targeting anyone carrying a camera or a pen, in what it described as an attempt to erase the Palestinian narrative. The syndicate added that the number of Palestinian journalists killed has risen to 262, underscoring what it called the scale of deliberate targeting of media workers.
The Palestinian Journalists’ Bloc in Gaza also mourned Washah, describing him as a prominent media voice who conveyed the suffering of Gaza’s population to the world despite the risks. The group stressed that his killing is not an isolated incident, but part of a broader pattern of violations against journalists, noting that Washah had been subjected to incitement and harassment prior to his loss.
Media and human rights organizations called for urgent international intervention to halt attacks on journalists and hold those responsible accountable, emphasizing that such actions constitute clear violations of international laws and conventions that guarantee the protection of media workers. The media office of the Islamic Jihad movement also condemned the killing, stating that targeting Washah inside his vehicle demonstrates a deliberate policy of attacking journalists and disregarding international legal protections.
The Popular Resistance Committees described the killing as a “new crime” and a blatant violation of international norms that ensure the protection of journalists during armed conflict. Similarly, the Palestinian Media Forum held Israel fully responsible, stating that the assassination reflects a continued pattern of targeting journalists in Gaza, and called on international institutions to take immediate action to protect media crews and ensure accountability.
The incident comes amid growing international concern over the safety of journalists in war zones, with warnings that continued targeting undermines the ability to report the truth. It also coincides with ongoing violations of the ceasefire agreement, which have resulted in the killing of hundreds of Palestinians and injuries to nearly 2,000 others since it came into effect. The ceasefire followed more than two years of Israeli genocide in Gaza that began in October 2023, which, according to Palestinian data, has resulted in over 72,000 killed and more than 172,000 injured.
