Gaza Herald – Tahrir Abu Mady holds her daughter Malak’s death certificate, yet a prisoner list suggests she might still be alive in Israeli custody. Her son Yousef also remains missing, leaving the family in unbearable uncertainty.
More than two years into Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza, thousands of families continue to endure the anguish of unverified deaths and shadowy detentions. In a partially destroyed home in southern Khan Younis, Tahrir lives amid charred walls and rebuilt sections that hold the memories of her missing children.
Malak, 20, was a university student and volunteer nurse at Nasser Hospital, a young woman who, like many others, sought to help amid the siege and bombardment. Displaced to the coastal area of al-Mawasi, the family briefly returned home to retrieve her university books when Israeli ground forces advanced into Khan Younis in 2024, but neither Malak nor her 18-year-old brother Yousef was ever seen again.
When relatives reached the heavily damaged property, forensic teams recovered human remains inside the blackened ruins. Gaza’s Ministry of Health issued a death certificate for Malak, but Yousef’s fate remained unknown, leaving the family in limbo.
Months later, the cruel twist emerged: recently released Palestinian detainees revealed a list of prisoners held in Israeli jails, and Malak’s name appeared with the chilling note “No information available.” The revelation shattered Tahrir’s fragile mourning and plunged her into anxiety, sleepless nights, and a constant state of uncertainty.
Human rights organizations warn that Malak’s case is far from unique. Thousands of Palestinians from Gaza have been detained by Israeli occupation forces in undisclosed locations without charge or legal representation. Maha al-Husseini, a researcher at Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor, estimates around 3,000 forcibly disappeared individuals remain unaccounted for, leaving families trapped in a limbo between unconfirmed death and hidden imprisonment.
Tahrir now lives suspended between two agonizing realities: an official death certificate and a name on a secret prisoner list. Amid the blackened walls of her home, she leaves a message for her missing daughter that the family is still waiting for her.
