Over 1,000 Palestinian Athletes Killed, Hundreds of Sports Facilities Destroyed in Gaza Genocide

Gaza Herald_The war in Gaza has not only devastated homes and infrastructure but has also dealt a severe blow to the Palestinian sports community. According to the Palestinian Olympic Committee, more than 1,000 athletes and sports professionals have been killed and hundreds of sports facilities damaged or destroyed since October 2023.

Speaking at a press conference on Monday, Asaad Al-Majdalawi, vice president of the Palestinian Olympic Committee, announced that at least 1,007 Palestinian athletes have lost their lives during Israel’s two-year military campaign in the Gaza Strip. Among those killed were 45 women involved in various sports disciplines.

Al-Majdalawi also detailed the extensive destruction inflicted on Gaza’s sports infrastructure. A total of 265 sports facilities have been affected, including 184 that were destroyed and 81 that sustained partial damage. Stadiums, training grounds, and club buildings have been left in ruins, effectively halting organized athletic activity across the territory.

He emphasized that the damage goes far beyond physical structures. The destruction has deprived thousands of children, teenagers, and young adults of their ability to train and participate in sports activities. For many, sports once provided structure, community, and opportunity; their loss represents not just a recreational setback but a disruption to personal development and future aspirations.

Al-Majdalawi noted that the impact on the sports sector is also psychological and economic. Athletes are grappling with trauma, sports development programs have been interrupted, and professional pathways have been severely constrained. Many coaches, trainers, and workers employed in the sports field have lost their livelihoods as facilities closed or were destroyed.

A US-brokered ceasefire has been in place since October 10, formally suspending the two-year war that has killed more than 72,000 Palestinians, the majority of them women and children, and injured over 171,000 since October 2023. However, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry, Israeli forces have continued to carry out violations since the truce began, resulting in the deaths of 603 Palestinians and injuries to 1,618 others.

For the Palestinian sports community, officials say the toll represents not only the loss of life and infrastructure but the collapse of an entire athletic ecosystem that once nurtured talent, ambition, and national representation.
