Gaza Herald_ The Israeli military announced this week that it killed Ahmad Hassan Swailem, identified as the head of the sniper unit in the Beit Hanoun Battalion of Hamas’ armed wing, the Al-Qassam Brigades.
In a statement, the army said Swailem was involved in several attacks against Israeli forces during ground operations in northern Gaza in 2025. Israeli officials alleged that operations attributed to him resulted in the deaths of seven soldiers and injuries to seven others. The military described the strike as a significant operational action against Hamas’ command structure.
Strike in Gaza City
According to Israeli sources, Swailem was killed in an airstrike that targeted a residential apartment in the Al-Nasr neighborhood of Gaza City. Palestinian sources reported that another man, Ibrahim Al-Zaanin, was also killed in the strike. Local reports indicated that a child died in the same incident and that several others were injured.
Funeral processions were held the following day. Local accounts described Swailem as having remained active in northern Gaza during ongoing fighting.
Alleged Operations in Beit Hanoun
The Israeli military linked Swailem to three separate incidents in 2025 in the Beit Hanoun area of northern Gaza. This location has seen repeated clashes since the start of the war.
- April 19, 2025: Israeli authorities reported that one soldier was killed and three others seriously wounded in what they described as an ambush east of Beit Hanoun.
- April 24, 2025: The army said another soldier was killed and two more seriously injured in sniper fire in the same area.
- July 7, 2025: Israeli officials stated that five soldiers were killed and two seriously wounded in a complex attack involving explosive devices targeting infantry forces.
Hamas’ armed wing released statements and video footage on the dates of those incidents claiming responsibility for attacks in Beit Hanoun, though independent verification of operational details remains limited.
Personal Loss Amid War
Beyond the military allegations, Swailem’s story also reflects the personal toll of the war in Gaza.
According to family members and local sources, an Israeli airstrike in May 2025 killed his wife and three daughters. Videos circulated on social media showing him mourning over their bodies. The images spread widely in Gaza and were cited by residents as emblematic of the broader civilian suffering during the conflict.
Israel has repeatedly stated that it targets Hamas operatives and infrastructure and accuses the group of operating within densely populated civilian areas. Palestinian officials and human rights organizations have documented significant civilian casualties since the war began.
Beit Hanoun’s Strategic Importance
Beit Hanoun, located in northern Gaza near the Israeli border and the Erez crossing, has been a focal point of intense fighting. Its proximity to Israeli communities and military positions has made it strategically significant for both sides.
Israeli media have described the area as one of the most challenging operational zones for ground forces. Palestinian armed groups have said they relied on ambush tactics and explosive devices in the area. Months of bombardment and fighting have left much of Beit Hanoun heavily damaged or destroyed.
Continuing Conflict
The killing of Swailem comes amid ongoing hostilities and deepening humanitarian concerns in Gaza. The conflict has resulted in significant casualties on both sides and widespread destruction across the territory.
As fighting continues, individual stories, whether of combatants or civilians, remain intertwined with a broader war that has reshaped communities, intensified grievances, and left lasting human and political consequences.
