Gaza Herald – The New York Times reported that a U.S.-led team drafted a plan to gradually disarm the Gaza resistance capable of striking Israel while allowing Hamas to retain some light weapons. The team included U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff, presidential adviser Jared Kushner, and former senior UN official Nikolay Mladenov, who will head the so-called “Peace Council.”
According to the report, the draft plan, based on principles publicly discussed last month at the Davos forum, proposes the immediate removal of heavy weapons and registration of personal arms under the oversight of a new Palestinian administrative authority. The exact types of weapons targeted were not specified.
Officials told the Times that Israel is unlikely to withdraw its forces from Gaza until Hamas and other armed factions surrender their weapons.
The disarmament process is expected to take months or longer, followed by the deployment of an international stabilization force, extensive reconstruction, and administration of the territory by a Palestinian technocratic committee.
