Forced Evacuation Orders in Gaza City: Residents Stand Firm Amid Warnings of Catastrophe

Gaza Herald- The Israeli occupation continues its relentless campaign against civilians in Gaza, where a genocidal war has been waged for nearly 23 months. Gaza City now faces an aggressive assault as Israel seeks to seize control, while airstrikes and bombardments persist across the besieged enclave.

Since dawn on Tuesday, at least 15 Palestinians were killed, including six waiting for desperately needed aid, highlighting the indiscriminate nature of Israel’s attacks on the blockaded territory. According to Gaza’s Ministry of Health, the death toll from Israeli aggression has now reached 64,605, with 163,319 injured since October 7, 2023.

No Equipment to Rescue Survivors Under Rubble

Israeli forces issued new evacuation orders targeting three residential buildings in Gaza City’s Public Security junction, home to dozens of families. These orders come amid the systematic destruction of high-rises across the city.

Major Mahmoud Basal of Gaza Civil Defense explained that survivors are trapped under rubble in multiple areas, yet rescue teams lack the heavy equipment needed to save them. Despite Israel’s threats, Gaza City residents continue to refuse forced displacement, fully aware that leaving or staying puts their lives in grave danger.

Basal warned that 1.3 million people in Gaza City face the threat of mass death, predicting that Israeli forces could bomb dozens of homes and displaced families’ tents daily. He added that up to 300 Palestinians could be killed each day if Israel executes its plans, highlighting the occupation’s clear aim: the forced expulsion of over a million residents from their homes.

Imminent Humanitarian Catastrophe

The Ministry of Health in Gaza has called on the international community to protect hospitals and medical staff and to open safe corridors, warning that the Israeli evacuation ultimatum toward the southern al-Mawasi area could trigger a catastrophic humanitarian disaster. Thousands of patients and wounded are at extreme risk.

On Tuesday, the Israeli army issued a direct order to nearly one million Palestinians in Gaza City to evacuate south to al-Mawasi. Yet reports indicate that approximately 300,000 Palestinians have refused to comply, standing firm in their homes despite the looming threat of mass violence.

The world must recognize that Israel’s evacuation orders are not mere military strategy; they are part of an ongoing campaign of ethnic cleansing and collective punishment against the Palestinian population. Gaza’s residents are facing a choice between death by bombardment or death through forced displacement, yet they continue to resist, embodying courage and resilience in the face of overwhelming aggression.

Voices from Gaza City

“The question on everyone’s lips was the same: where do we go?”

Many families told the Gaza Herald they cannot leave their homes despite the danger.

Suha, 34, a widowed mother of four, said: “If we leave, where will we go? The South is already overcrowded; there is no space to set foot. I would rather stay in my home than be packed like cattle in tents.”

Samar, the wife of a detainee in Israeli prisons, says: “I don’t have the money to flee with my children and my orphaned siblings, as my mother was killed at the beginning of the war. I cannot afford to buy a tent or pay for transport. I will wait for my husband in the north and will not be displaced.”

Abudullah, 36, a Business owner, added: “Even the areas they call ‘safe’ are being bombed. How can we trust that moving south will protect us? Gaza has nowhere truly safe.”

Yousef, 45, a father of five, explained: “The evacuation zones are already full. There is no space to survive. If they force us out, we’ll be sitting ducks in open fields and tents, with nowhere to run.”

Mahmoud, living abroad outside Gaza, says: “My family has already endured life as displaced once, and they will not go through this torment again. They lived in a tent for an entire year, and now they would rather set up a tent over our destroyed home than face displacement again.”

Shaimaa, 22, a university student, said: “All the so-called humanitarian areas are being targeted. Everyone here knows it; no place is safe. The evacuation is a trap, not a protection.”

Alaa, 32, a shopkeeper, said: “We cannot move to these so-called safe areas. Bombs chase us everywhere. Even hospitals and shelters are being targeted. Most of us now live in tents, whether in the north or the south, because the criminal occupation has nearly wiped out Gaza City. But having a tent in front of my own home is far better than staying in an unfamiliar land. I will remain on my land in the north, and I refuse to leave it.”
