Israeli Settlers Dream of “Gaza Riviera” While Palestinians Face Genocide

Gaza Herald – As the world watches in horror the unfolding humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, far-right Israeli politicians and settlers gathered in the Knesset on Tuesday to promote an agenda that many Palestinians see as a blueprint for permanent dispossession.

With over 59,000 Palestinians mostly women and children already killed since October 2023, Israel’s far-right establishment is now openly fantasizing about a future Gaza emptied of its native population and transformed into a playground for Jewish settlers. The statements made at this conference reflect not only dangerous extremism but a blatant disregard for international law, human dignity, and the right of Palestinians to exist on their own land.

At the conference, provocatively titled “The Gaza Riviera – From Vision to Reality”, Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich declared that Israel had been given the “green light” by the United States to seize Gaza and turn it into a “resort town.” Smotrich claimed U.S. President Joe Biden had backed the idea of a “prosperous” Gaza one that is no longer Palestinian. He added that plans were already underway to resettle parts of the Strip with new Israeli communities, starting with the northern border. The minister also reiterated support for a proposal to facilitate the mass emigration of Palestinians, a euphemism for ethnic cleansing.

Smotrich’s remarks were echoed by other participants, including members of the extremist Nachala settler movement and religious Zionist politicians. Israeli MP Limor Son Har-Melech called for the building of “big and fortified Jewish cities all over Gaza,” while MP Zvi Sukkot praised Trump’s vision and said Israel now had the power to implement it. Speaker after speaker painted a future Gaza devoid of Palestinians, met with cheers and standing ovations from attendees.

The idea of forcibly removing Gaza’s population and transforming the Strip into a Jewish-only enclave is not new, but its open discussion within the Israeli legislature and in coordination with settler organizations is alarming. Daniella Weiss, head of the Nachala movement, stated plainly that “the Arab Gaza chapter is over,” while her colleague Lital Slonim presented a detailed blueprint for Jewish colonization of Gaza’s lands. These statements coincide with Israel’s ongoing military assault that has decimated infrastructure, hospitals, and food systems raising credible accusations of genocide before the International Court of Justice.

The United States has so far remained silent on Smotrich’s claims of endorsement, although the idea of a “Gaza Riviera” was first floated by former U.S. President Donald Trump. The Biden administration’s failure to condemn such proposals only emboldens those advocating for apartheid and mass expulsion under the guise of “redevelopment.”

The normalization of settler-colonial rhetoric within Israeli politics reveals the endgame: a complete erasure of Gaza’s Palestinian identity. These plans presented under the pretext of “prosperity” and “security” amount to little more than a modern-day Nakba. As families are buried under rubble and children starve in besieged cities, far-right Israeli leaders are busy drawing maps of a future without Palestinians. The international community must recognize these statements for what they are: genocidal incitement disguised as urban planning—and act before rhetoric turns into irreversible reality.
