Gaza Herald- Hundreds of thousands of school-age children have been deprived of completing their education due to the ongoing Israeli genocidal attack on the Gaza Strip. Hundreds of schools have been completely or partially destroyed, including UNRWA-run schools.
The U.N. children’s agency, UNICEF, estimates that nearly 90% of schools in Gaza require substantial reconstruction before they can reopen.
Education in Gaza was suspended after Israel launched its brutal aggression on the Strip in October 2023, as schools were turned into overcrowded shelters as hundreds of thousands fled Israeli bombardment.
The closures have stripped children of a vital lifeline as they endure war, hunger and displacement.
According to UNICEF estimates, over 650,000 students have had no access to education since the start of the war, and nearly 40,000 students have been unable to take university entry exams that largely determine their career prospects.
Older students have lost access to graduation exams and college applications, with nearly 40,000 students unable to sit university entry exams for the first time in decades.
