Report: Israel is Detaining and Killing Palestinian Prisoners at Record Levels

Gaza Herald – Deaths of Palestinian detainees in Israeli custody have surged dramatically since the outbreak of genocide in October 2023, far beyond pre‑war norms, a new report has revealed.

Palestinian rights groups documented at least 98 Palestinian deaths in Israeli prisons and detention facilities by late 2025, with many fatalities linked to torture, medical neglect, starvation, and systematic abuse rather than natural causes.

According to the sources, dozens of those who died had been held without charge, denied adequate medical treatment, or subjected to harsh treatment conditions that breached international norms. These deaths occurred across multiple facilities managed by both the Israel Prison Service and military detention centers, and advocates warned the true toll is likely much higher due to administrative opacity and missing detainees.

An investigative Israeli report further found that Palestinian detainee deaths climbed to at least 110 between January 2023 and mid‑2025, far exceeding historical averages, and included individuals transferred from prisons to hospitals where they later died, underscoring severe conditions inside Israeli detention.

Despite documented deaths, few cases resulted in meaningful accountability; rights advocates say only limited investigations or disciplinary actions followed, leaving families without clarity or justice.

Palestinian authorities estimate that more than 9,300 Palestinians, including 70 women and 350 children, remain imprisoned by Israeli authorities, including hundreds of women and children, as the crisis in detention continues against the backdrop of larger hostilities and international concern over the treatment of detainees.
