Hamas and Red Cross Continue Search for Bodies of Israeli Captives in Khan Younis

Gaza Herald- In a delicate and somber effort amid the fragile ceasefire in Gaza, Hamas’s armed wing, the al-Qassam Brigades, is working alongside teams from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to locate and recover the bodies of Israeli captives buried in Khan Younis.

Search operations are focused primarily on the eastern parts of the city, where entire neighborhoods were flattened during the latest Israeli military offensive. Much of the area lies beyond the so-called “yellow line,” a zone currently under Israeli control, complicating recovery efforts.

Hamas has stated its willingness to extract and return all remains of Israeli captives discovered in these zones, in line with the terms of the ceasefire agreement. This move is being seen as a signal that the second phase of the truce, focused on recovery and prisoner exchange, is underway.

However, the group has raised concerns about the severe operational difficulties it faces on the ground. Many of the bodies are believed to be trapped under the debris of homes and infrastructure destroyed in heavy airstrikes, making recovery extremely dangerous and complex.

Hamas has appealed to mediators to pressure Israel into allowing the entry of heavy equipment and additional specialist rescue teams to speed up the process.

Despite the ceasefire framework, the Israeli military continues to exert ground pressure and conduct sporadic airstrikes in the region, further endangering ongoing recovery missions and complicating access for humanitarian teams.

This coordinated effort between Hamas and the ICRC marks a rare and delicate collaboration aimed at upholding the humanitarian clauses of the truce agreement, though the volatile conditions on the ground remain a persistent threat to progress.
