Gaza Herald_ As Israeli and Palestinian captives return home under the newly enacted ceasefire, uncertainty looms over the fate of many Palestinians still held in Israeli prisons. Among the most prominent is Dr Hussam Abu Safia, a respected pediatrician and hospital director in Gaza who was abducted by Israeli forces in December 2024 and remains in detention despite mounting international outrage.
A Symbol of Gaza’s Medical Resilience
For many Palestinians, Dr Abu Safia represents the courage and endurance of Gaza’s medical community, which has faced relentless Israeli bombardment and systematic destruction of hospitals for more than two years.
The doctor was seized from Kamal Adwan Hospital, where he continued treating children even after his own son was killed in an Israeli airstrike. His story has come to symbolize the human cost of Israel’s war and the moral strength of those who never abandoned their patients.
Detention Without Trial
Human rights organizations report that Abu Safia has been imprisoned without charge or trial, under Israel’s broad “security” law. According to his lawyer, he has been subjected to severe physical assault and beatings while held in Ofer Military Prison.
Amnesty International says that the doctor lost a significant amount of weight during detention and was denied legal counsel for two months after his arrest — clear violations of international law.
Contradicting Reports
Confusion surrounds whether Abu Safia will be included in the ongoing prisoner exchange. Some reports from Israeli and Western media claim he will remain in custody, while others suggest that his name was added to a list of detainees expected to be released.
As of late Monday, however, Dr Abu Safia remains behind bars.
Torture and Abuse in Israeli Prisons
Rights groups and recently released detainees continue to describe torture, sexual abuse, and starvation inside Israeli detention facilities. Many Palestinians freed under the ceasefire show visible signs of severe weight loss, injuries, and psychological trauma.
One recently released detainee said, “Dr Hussam Abu Safia is being tortured right now. His only crime was saving lives.”
Global Pressure for His Release
Following the ceasefire announcement, pressure has grown on Israel to release the doctor and other detained medical workers. The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) has urged U.S. President Donald Trump to ensure that Israel complies with the ceasefire and frees Abu Safia immediately.
“We call on the President to demand the release of Dr Hussam Abu Safia and all other kidnapped medical professionals,” CAIR said in a statement.
“There Can Be No Peace Without Justice”
UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese condemned the lack of international pressure to secure the release of Palestinian civilians, calling it a major failure of the U.S.-brokered ceasefire deal.
“There can be no peace without justice, human rights, and dignity for all. Palestinian lives matter,” she wrote on X.
For Gaza’s people, the continued detention of Dr Abu Safia is a painful reminder that true peace cannot exist while doctors are jailed for healing, and civilians are punished for surviving.
