Trump Breaks with Netanyahu, Hinting Israel Has Become a Burden, Not an Ally

Gaza Herald_ Israel has become a growing liability, not only to its traditional critics but even to its closest allies, including former U.S. President Donald Trump, says Ori Goldberg, an Israeli political analyst.

“Nobody will come out and say this publicly, but Trump’s sudden decision to interpret Hamas’s reply as a sign of readiness for peace suggests something deeper,” Goldberg told Al Jazeera from Tel Aviv. “When Trump looks at Netanyahu, when he looks at Israel, he sees a burden. In Trump’s own words, a loser.”

Goldberg explained that Israel simply did not anticipate such a shift. After years of operating within what he called a “never-ending cycle of genocidal and ethnic cleansing activities,” Israel had grown used to acting without accountability. It could not comprehend that the world might begin to see through its justifications for war.

He pointed to how global reactions have changed dramatically: “Look at the difference between the first flotilla that tried to reach Gaza years ago and the recent Sumud flotilla. The world’s response to Israel’s aggression this time was nothing like before. Israel this morning stands as isolated as it’s been in years.”

Goldberg added that Netanyahu might still find political motivation to move forward with Trump’s proposal. “If a snap election is called in Israel, it would serve him to appear as the leader who not only waged the difficult war but also signed the difficult deal,” he said.

The message between the lines is clear: Israel’s impunity is cracking. Even figures like Trump, once one of its strongest backers, now see the Netanyahu government as a liability rather than an ally.

As the political tide shifts, Israel’s long-standing impunity is facing cracks from within its own alliances. Trump’s blunt remarks reflect a larger change, one where even Washington’s most loyal partners begin questioning the cost of Israel’s wars. For Palestinians, this moment carries a sense of vindication: after decades of suffering and displacement, the narrative is shifting, and the world is finally starting to see Israel not as a victim, but as the aggressor. Whether this will lead to accountability or yet another round of political maneuvering remains to be seen, but the cracks in Israel’s once-untouchable image are unmistakable.
