Gaza Herald – Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has declared that a large-scale military operation in the occupied West Bank is “on the way,” following an attack in Hebron on Friday that resulted in the deaths of two Israeli soldiers. Speaking at the scene later that day, Netanyahu stated that he and Defence Minister Israel Katz are considering an army operation in the territory on a scale not witnessed since Israel occupied it in 1967.
The Israeli army “is ready to execute it and we will set the timing, but it is on the way,” he said. Visiting the site with his right-wing allies, Netanyahu outlined that the first phase would involve the forced displacement of Palestinians in Hebron, searching homes, and destroying what he termed “terrorist infrastructure.” The announcement came as tensions remained high in the region.
Israeli army chief Eyal Zamir, who also visited the scene, stated that troops would “act forcefully, pursue and reach all those involved in the attack.” According to The Times of Israel, Zamir emphasized that they are at the highest level of readiness and alert across all fronts. He added that the army would not be “drawn in” by its enemies during what he called a “sensitive week,” referring to the upcoming election.
Following the initial attack in Hebron earlier on Friday, Israeli forces killed two Palestinians in an exchange of fire. The incident also wounded six Israeli soldiers. The government’s response signals a significant escalation in military activity within the occupied territories, marking a shift towards more aggressive tactics in response to recent violence.
Netanyahu’s comments underscore the administration’s commitment to a robust military presence in the West Bank. The planned operations aim to dismantle networks deemed responsible for the attacks while asserting control over key areas in Hebron. This approach reflects a broader strategy to address security concerns through direct intervention and territorial management.
The situation in Hebron remains volatile as authorities prepare for potential widespread military actions. Residents face uncertainty regarding their safety and future in the area. International observers continue to monitor developments closely, noting the potential for further instability in the region.
