Gaza Herald – Gaza’s Civil Defense teams recovered the remains of 12 Palestinians from beneath the rubble of a home destroyed during Israel’s genocide on the Gaza Strip, as rescue crews continue the painstaking search for thousands of Palestinians still buried under destroyed buildings.
The remains were recovered from the home of al-Batniji family in the Asqoula area of Gaza City’s Zeitoun neighborhood, according to Gaza’s Civil Defense.
After completing the operation, crews began work to recover the remains of Palestinians believed to be buried beneath the destroyed home of al-Maghribi family in the same area.
The recovery operations come as Gaza’s Civil Defense intensifies efforts to locate and retrieve Palestinians who remain beneath the enormous amount of rubble left by Israel’s bombardment and destruction of residential areas across the Strip.
Earlier this month, Civil Defense teams recovered the remains of 112 Palestinians from the Abu Sharia and al-Hassaina families after an Israeli strike destroyed a residential area in Gaza City’s Sabra neighborhood.
Israel’s bombardment has destroyed homes and residential areas across Gaza, leaving vast quantities of rubble and an unknown number of Palestinians unaccounted for beneath the ruins. The death toll since October 7, 2023 has reached nearly 74,000 Palestinians, with more than 174,000 injured, according to Palestinian authorities.
Gaza’s Civil Defense crews are carrying out recovery operations with severely limited and outdated equipment. The continued restrictions on the entry of heavy machinery and specialised rescue equipment have made the recovery of those buried beneath destroyed buildings extraordinarily slow and dangerous.
Behind every recovered set of remains is another Palestinian family finally receiving an answer after months or years of uncertainty.
Across Gaza, Civil Defense workers continue digging through the ruins by hand and with whatever equipment remains available, searching for the Palestinian killed trying to return them to their families for a dignified burial.
