Gaza Herald – The Protection Center for Human Rights has documented the killing of 235 Palestinian fishermen and the injury of 143 others, including 16 with severe wounds. Additionally, 130 fishermen were detained between October 7, 2023, and October 2026. These figures are detailed in a new report titled “Boats Under Fire,” which examines violations against the fishing sector.
According to the center, Israeli forces destroyed or confiscated 1,810 fishing vessels. This inventory included motorized dhows, rowing boats, and small launches. The military campaign also targeted infrastructure, destroying 270 out of 310 fishing stations along the Gaza coast.
The report notes that damage extended beyond boats and stations. A water desalination plant, an ice factory, and a kitchen designated for fishermen were also destroyed. The center stated that these actions severely impacted the livelihoods of thousands of families dependent on this trade.
Furthermore, the organization highlighted restrictions preventing access to the sea. Documentation shows that the permitted fishing area was reduced to zero nautical miles during the war. Teams observed daily gunfire directed at fishermen along the coastline throughout the conflict period.
The center explained that military operations forced fishermen and their families to abandon their homes. This displacement resulted in the loss of income sources and the inability to secure basic needs. The situation exacerbated pre-war constraints, making regular professional practice impossible.
Impact analysis indicates effects surpassing material losses. The targeting of the sector affected food security and the local economy across the strip. The report emphasized that while restrictions existed before the conflict, wartime conditions intensified them to a critical level.
In its conclusions, the Protection Center for Human Rights called on the international community to act. It demanded measures to protect fishermen and civilians from further violations. The organization urged ensuring access to medical treatment for the wounded, including cases requiring travel outside the region.
The statement also requested guarantees for entering food, medicines, and essential supplies to residents. It asked for mechanisms enabling fishermen to restore their livelihoods and exercise their right to work. Finally, it called for investigations into documented violations and accountability under international law.
