Gaza Herald – Kazem Gharibabadi, Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs, responded to the adoption of an anti-Iranian resolution by the International Atomic Energy Agency Board of Governors. He stated that the authors of the resolution would not be able to achieve anything, even within the UN Security Council.
The comments came after the United States and three European nations submitted a politicized draft resolution. This measure was approved during the evening session of the board on Wednesday. The resolution calls for referring the Iranian nuclear file to the Security Council.
Addressing the decision, Gharibabadi accused the drafters of attacking Iranian nuclear facilities subject to IAEA safeguards. He argued that they abandon the natural verification process and then use this failure as an excuse to issue a resolution at the board level.
Writing on the X platform, the deputy minister asserted that these misleading campaigns cannot compensate for the failure of their policies and procedures. He emphasized that such actions would yield no results in the Security Council either.
The IAEA Board of Governors approved the resolution with 23 votes in favor. There were three votes against and eight abstentions. Russia, China, and Niger voted against the measure, which seeks to highlight Iran’s lack of cooperation.
The draft resolution was prepared by the United States, Britain, France, and Germany. It requests that IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi submit a report regarding Iran’s non-cooperation and compliance issues to both the UN Security Council and the General Assembly.
This diplomatic move marks a significant escalation in tensions surrounding Tehran’s nuclear program. The vote reflects deep divisions among member states regarding the verification mechanisms and the appropriate response to alleged violations.
Iranian officials have consistently rejected what they describe as politically motivated accusations. They maintain that their nuclear activities are peaceful and fully compliant with international obligations under the Non-Proliferation Treaty.
The rejection of the resolution underscores Tehran’s stance against external pressure. Gharibabadi’s remarks signal that Iran does not intend to alter its position based on the board’s decisions or subsequent referrals to higher UN bodies.
