Gaza Herald – The United Nations has highlighted the worsening water crisis facing displaced families in the Gaza Strip, where access to safe drinking water has become a daily struggle amid damaged infrastructure, overcrowded displacement camps, and a heavy reliance on water trucks.
In a report from Gaza, UN News documented how displaced residents begin each day waiting for water tankers to arrive. At the sound of the truck’s horn, families rush forward carrying jerrycans and buckets, hoping to collect enough potable water. Long queues and irregular deliveries have turned the search for drinking water into one of the most difficult aspects of daily life for hundreds of thousands of displaced Palestinians.
Displaced resident Mervat Dawas, who now lives in a camp near Gaza City’s coastline after fleeing Beit Lahia, described the severe hardships families face. She said access to desalinated water is inconsistent, forcing residents to carry heavy containers over long distances, often without knowing whether water will still be available by the time they reach the distribution point. Another displaced resident, Moeen Marouf, said life in the camps now revolves around the arrival of water trucks, noting that missing a delivery often means families are left without water for drinking or washing.
According to UNICEF, around 1.1 million children in Gaza face daily uncertainty over access to safe water. The agency says 82% of households are experiencing water insecurity, while up to 70% of the population cannot collect the recommended minimum of six liters of water per person per day for drinking and cooking. Despite operational challenges, water delivered by tanker trucks remains a critical lifeline for hundreds of thousands of people across the enclave.
The United Nations warned that overcrowded displacement sites, soaring summer temperatures, and limited water supplies continue to intensify the humanitarian crisis. With most displaced families depending on mobile water tankers as their primary source of drinking water, obtaining even a few liters of clean water has become an exhausting daily struggle for those living in Gaza’s displacement camps.
