Gaza Herald – The Israeli Supreme Court has ordered the Israeli occupation government to respond by Tuesday, July 7, to a legal petition concerning the health and detention of Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, a Palestinian physician from Gaza, amid mounting concerns over his condition in Israeli detention.
The court instructed the government to disclose Dr. Abu Safiya’s medical condition regarding threats to his life while in detention.
The petition was filed by Physicians for Human Rights–Israel (PHRI), which is seeking the release of 14 Palestinian doctors from the Gaza Strip who are being kidnapped by the Israeli occupation army during the genocide.
According to PHRI, the petition was originally submitted on April 30, but the Israeli government received multiple extensions to postpone its response. The court has now set what is expected to be a final deadline for the government to reply.
The case comes amid growing concern from Palestinian and international human rights organizations over the treatment of detained Palestinian medical personnel. Rights groups have called for the immediate release of Dr. Abu Safiya and the other detained healthcare workers, arguing that medical personnel are afforded special protection under international humanitarian law and expressing concern over reports of ill-treatment and deteriorating health conditions in Israeli detention.
