Over 232,000 Tons of Explosives Dropped on Gaza in 1,000 Days, Official Says

Gaza Herald – More than 232,000 tons of high explosives have been dropped on the Gaza Strip during Israel’s military campaign, according to Ismail Al-Thawabta, Director General of Gaza’s Government Media Office, who said the assault has resulted in unprecedented human and material losses over the past 1,000 days.

Speaking during the Nabd Gaza program organized by Palestine Newspaper, Al-Thawabta said Israeli forces struck Al-Mawasi, an area Israel had designated as a “safe zone”, 241 times, while more than 2,000 Palestinian families were completely erased from the civil registry after every family member was killed. Another 6,020 families were left with only a single surviving member, while thousands of people remain missing beneath the rubble.

Al-Thawabta said that more than 55% of those killed were women, children, and elderly people, including over 21,500 children and 12,000 women. Among the child victims were 1,022 infants under one year old, as well as 520 babies who were born during the genocide and later killed. More than 2,700 children lost both parents, while over 22,000 fathers were also killed.

He accused Israel of systematically targeting Gaza’s civilian infrastructure, including the healthcare, media, and public service sectors. According to the figures, 1,700 healthcare workers, 145 civil defense personnel, 262 journalists, 194 municipal employees, and 2,800 police and civilian security personnel have been killed during the genocide.

Al-Thawabta said Israeli attacks have destroyed or forced 38 hospitals and 46 healthcare centers out of service, leaving Gaza’s health system on the verge of collapse. He added that 22,000 wounded and sick Palestinians have been prevented from leaving Gaza for medical treatment, including 5,200 children in urgent need of evacuation.

He also highlighted the devastating impact on education, reporting the deaths of more than 20,000 students, 830 teachers, and 194 university professors and academics, while accusing Israeli occupation forces of targeting educational institutions throughout the Strip.

According to Al-Thawabta, the war has caused an estimated $80 billion in direct economic losses, including nearly $1 billion in damage to Gaza’s media sector following the destruction of more than 155 media institutions. He further stated that 2,605 Palestinians were killed while attempting to access humanitarian aid, blaming Israel’s blockade and restrictions on aid deliveries for worsening the humanitarian catastrophe.

He called on the international community to end its political and military support for Israel, compel its withdrawal from Gaza, reopen border crossings, and ensure the unrestricted entry of humanitarian assistance.
