Gaza Herald – A documentary film examining the systematic Israeli attacks on doctors in the Gaza Strip has won the “Best Current Affairs Programme” award at the 2026 British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Awards.
The British Academy announced the win during a ceremony in London on Sunday evening, where the film “Gaza: Doctors Under Attack” was recognized as one of the most prominent television productions of 2025, alongside several acclaimed British dramas and documentaries.
The film was originally produced for the BBC. However, the broadcaster decided to cancel its scheduled airing in June 2025, citing concerns over a lack of impartiality and alleged bias. It was later broadcast by Channel 4 in the United Kingdom.
Production company Basement Films stated in an earlier release that the documentary had been granted at least six scheduled broadcast dates and underwent extensive editorial review before the BBC ultimately pulled it.
The company’s founder, Ben de Pear, accused the BBC of obstructing journalistic work and attempting to suppress voices, according to the statement.
While accepting the BAFTA for Best Current Affairs Program, presenter Ramita Navai said: “The BBC paid for the film and then refused to air it, but we refused to be silent or censored.”
Executive producer Ben de Pear also criticized the BBC’s decision, stating: “If you dropped the film, will you also drop us from the BAFTAs?”
The documentary explores what it describes as deliberate targeting of medical facilities and healthcare workers during the genocide on Gaza that began on October 8, 2023.
It includes testimonies and footage of attacks, kidnappings, and abuse of medical staff, in violation of the protections afforded to healthcare workers under international law during wars.
According to reports from UN agencies and international human rights organizations, Gaza’s medical personnel have faced direct targeting since the start of the genocide, including killings, injuries, and detentions.
The Director General of Gaza’s Government Media Office, Ismail al-Thawabta, previously stated that approximately 1,581 medical workers have been killed since October 7, 2023.
He also noted that 362 medical personnel were kidnapped during the genocide, including 88 doctors.
