Gaza Herald – Near Gaza’s seaport, thousands of displaced Palestinians endure nights swallowed by complete darkness, as Israel’s ongoing blockade prevents the entry of lighting equipment, batteries, generators, and basic electrical supplies.
Inside overcrowded displacement camps, families rely on the faint glow of mobile phones to navigate shattered tents that no longer protect them from heat, cold, or fear. Residents say the absence of electricity has turned every night into a terrifying struggle for survival.
“We cannot even buy a flashlight to light our tent or our small shop,” one displaced father said. “Everything electrical is banned from entering Gaza.”
The darkness has intensified feelings of isolation and insecurity, especially as Israeli airstrikes and Apache helicopter attacks continue near densely populated shelters. Parents describe sleepless nights spent trying to calm terrified children while fearing sudden bombardment.
Women in the camps also report increasing hardship after storms and strong winds repeatedly collapsed fragile tents during the night, forcing families to flee in total darkness with nowhere safe to go.
According to Gaza’s electricity distribution company, the Strip has lost more than 2.1 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity since October 2023, after widespread destruction of power infrastructure and the shutdown of all commercial electricity sources, deepening what residents describe as a humanitarian catastrophe beyond survival.
