Gaza Herald – The Executive Board of UNESCO has unanimously adopted a new resolution addressing the situation in the Gaza Strip and following up on the implementation of previous decisions related to the territory.
Adopted during its 224th session, the resolution highlights the extensive damage inflicted on hundreds of schools, universities, and heritage sites in Gaza as a result of ongoing Israeli attacks. It also raises serious concerns about the risks faced by journalists and media workers, describing these as violations of international humanitarian law and the core principles upheld by UNESCO.
Adel Attiya, the Permanent Delegate of Palestine to UNESCO, welcomed the unanimous adoption of the resolution, stressing the importance of intensified international efforts to alleviate the suffering of the Palestinian civilians.
He noted that UNESCO’s General Conference had previously adopted four resolutions in November in support of Palestine. These addressed the status of Jerusalem, the impact of the situation in Gaza on UNESCO’s areas of work, the continuation of educational activities by UNRWA, and support for educational and cultural institutions in the occupied Arab territories.
The resolution comes amid growing international solidarity with the Palestinian cause and a perceived decline in Israel’s global standing following the events and widespread destruction reported in Gaza over the past two years.
