Amnesty International Calls for Immediate Release of Dr. Abu Safiya

Gaza Herald- Amnesty International has called for the immediate and unconditional release of Palestinian doctor Hossam Abu Safiya, who has been detained in Israeli detention camps for 451 days.

The organization warned that his health is rapidly deteriorating due to alleged physical and psychological torture, as well as the lack of adequate medical care.

Abu Safiya was abducted during an Israeli storm on Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza. He remains in detention without charge or trial under Israel’s administrative detention policy, which affects thousands of Palestinians.

Amnesty stated that his case is not isolated but part of a broader pattern of targeting Palestinian healthcare workers, aimed at undermining Gaza’s already fragile health system.

The organization also noted that his case reflects widespread violations against Palestinian detainees, including denial of fair trials, torture, and the absence of basic human rights protections.

Amnesty urged the Australian government to intervene, specifically calling on Foreign Minister Penny Wong to take immediate action, stressing that individual efforts alone are insufficient to save his life.

Dr. Abu Safiya is known for his humanitarian work, continuing to treat patients despite the ongoing blockade and attacks, even after losing one of his sons in an Israeli attack in October 2024. He has also contributed to documenting the impact of Israeli actions on Gaza’s healthcare system, making his detention a matter of growing international human rights concern.
