UN Experts Demand Immediate Release of Abu Safiya

Gaza Herald – Experts from the United Nations Human Rights Council have called for the immediate release of Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, a Palestinian physician from Gaza, following reports that he has been subjected to “severe torture” while in Israeli detention camps.

The experts stated they had received credible information indicating that Dr. Abu Safiya was exposed to torture and other forms of cruel, inhuman, and degrading treatment, warning that his health condition has significantly deteriorated. They emphasized that his detention conditions appear arbitrary and clearly violate international standards, particularly the Nelson Mandela Rules, which guarantee prisoners access to healthcare.

Dr. Abu Safiya, the director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza, has been held by Israeli forces since December 27, 2024, under the so-called “unlawful combatant” law, despite being a civilian medical professional. UN experts have repeatedly criticized this legal framework, describing it as inconsistent with international human rights and humanitarian law.

According to the statement, he has been systematically denied essential medical examinations and treatment, placing his life and well-being at serious risk. The experts stressed that all states are obligated under international law to protect healthcare workers and ensure proper care for detainees, particularly those who are wounded or ill.

They further warned that attacks against healthcare workers and the destruction of medical infrastructure in Gaza have continued despite the ceasefire, describing the situation as part of a broader pattern of violations affecting the health sector.

The experts urged the international community to take immediate action, calling on states with influence over Israel to use all available mechanisms to ensure his release, accountability, and access to urgent medical care, along with the protection of all detained healthcare workers.
