OCHA Reports Over One Million People in Gaza in Need of Shelter Support

Gaza Herald- OCHA revealed that recent rainstorms have left over one million people in the Gaza Strip in urgent need of shelter, affecting approximately 65,000 families.

The UN office highlighted that inadequate sewage systems and low-lying land led to rainwater flooding entire displacement sites, while relief workers supported around 80,000 families in December with tens of thousands of tents, plastic covers, blankets, and other essential items.

Humanitarian partners warned that tents are not a viable long-term shelter solution in Gaza, stressing the need for swift action toward more durable options such as repairing damaged homes, OCHA said.

The UN agency cautioned that limited land availability prevents many people from moving to safer, flood-resistant areas.

OCHA noted that the recent winter storms damaged temporary learning spaces and key access roads used by aid workers in Gaza.

OCHA reported that over the weekend, another child died from hypothermia, bringing the total number of child deaths related to the cold weather to 11.
