Gaza Herald _A newly released report by Israeli human rights organization B’Tselem, titled Living Hell, has delivered a chilling account of the systematic torture, sexual assault, and psychological abuse inflicted upon Palestinians held inside Israeli detention facilities.
The report documents what former detainees describe as routine and institutionalized violence, portraying a prison system designed not merely to detain, but to break bodies and crush human dignity.
Survivors Silenced Through Fear and Threats
According to Living Hell, many former prisoners remain too terrified to speak publicly about their experiences, after Israeli authorities allegedly threatened them with re-arrest, retaliation, and renewed abuse should they share details of what they endured behind bars.
B’Tselem notes that these threats are not isolated incidents, but rather part of a broader strategy of intimidation aimed at silencing survivors and preventing public scrutiny.
“Many released detainees are afraid to testify,” the report states, “after being explicitly warned that speaking out would result in renewed detention and punishment.”
Torture as Policy, Not Exception
The findings portray a detention system where torture, sexual violence, humiliation, and psychological terror are normalized tools of control. Former detainees recounted being subjected to beatings, prolonged stress positions, sleep deprivation, denial of medical care, sexual assault, and threats against their families.
B’Tselem stresses that such practices reflect systemic policy rather than individual misconduct, pointing to a structure that enables and protects abusers while denying victims any meaningful path to justice.
Control Through Terror
The report argues that Israel’s detention regime operates as a central mechanism of colonial domination, extending far beyond prison walls. By threatening former detainees into silence, Israeli authorities reinforce a system of collective fear and repression, exerting control over Palestinian society at large.
“These threats exemplify how the occupying power regulates every aspect of Palestinian life,” B’Tselem concludes, describing detention not as a legal measure, but as a political weapon designed to maintain subjugation.
Calls for International Accountability
Human rights advocates say the findings demand urgent international action, including independent investigations, sanctions, and accountability mechanisms. They warn that continued impunity risks further entrenching a system that systematically violates international law and basic human rights.
As the world focuses on Gaza, the report underscores that Palestinian suffering inside Israeli prisons remains one of the least visible, yet most brutal, dimensions of the occupation.
