Gaza Herald_ New satellite imagery and on-the-ground analysis have revealed that the Israeli military has significantly expanded its territorial control inside the Gaza Strip, pushing beyond the so-called “yellow line” , a military demarcation line , and systematically demolishing civilian buildings deep inside populated neighborhoods.
The images, published by Reuters, show Israeli forces relocating large yellow-painted concrete blocks dozens and sometimes hundreds of meters inside Palestinian residential areas, accompanied by widespread destruction of homes and infrastructure beyond previously agreed ceasefire boundaries.
From Demarcation to Encroachment
The “yellow line” was originally designated as a temporary military buffer zone marking Israeli troop positions under ceasefire arrangements. However, new evidence suggests the line is now being systematically shifted westward, effectively annexing additional territory inside Gaza through military force.
In several locations, Israeli troops installed new fortifications and barriers up to 200 meters beyond the original line, transforming once-populated neighborhoods into militarized no-man’s lands.
At least six new fortified military positions were constructed near the expanded line, reinforcing Israel’s deeper physical entrenchment inside Gaza.
Tuffah Neighborhood: A Historic District Reduced to Rubble
This expansion is most visible in al-Tuffah neighborhood, east of Gaza City, a historic residential district now almost entirely flattened after two years of relentless bombardment.
Following the ceasefire agreement that took effect in October, thousands of displaced Palestinians returned to the area, believing Israeli forces had withdrawn back to the original yellow line.
However, satellite images dated December 2 and December 13 show Israeli forces relocating concrete barriers nearly 200 meters into the neighborhood, followed by large-scale demolition operations.
Reuters analysis confirms that at least 40 civilian buildings were razed, leaving only a few standing structures between the new barriers and the original ceasefire boundary.
“Technical Limitations”, Israeli Justifications Rejected
An Israeli military source told Reuters that precisely marking the yellow line was not feasible due to existing buildings and infrastructure, claiming that official maps were illustrative rather than binding.
However, Palestinian groups and international legal observers reject this justification, arguing that territorial ambiguity is being weaponized to enable land seizure and forced displacement.
Under President Donald Trump’s 20-point ceasefire framework, all Israeli military operations were meant to halt immediately, including aerial bombardment and ground assaults, while troop positions were to remain frozen until full phased withdrawal.
Yet evidence shows that destruction and territorial expansion continued unabated.
Expansion Across Gaza: From Gaza City to Khan Younis
Satellite images from Khan Younis in southern Gaza reveal Israeli troops placing concrete barriers up to 390 meters beyond the yellow line, alongside the demolition of residential buildings and the dismantling of at least two displacement camps, forcibly uprooting families who had already been displaced multiple times.
These actions have effectively compressed Gaza’s population into an increasingly narrow coastal strip, dramatically worsening overcrowding, humanitarian collapse, and environmental degradation.
Hamas: “A Grave Violation of the Ceasefire”
Hamas spokesperson Hazem Qassem condemned the actions as a blatant and dangerous breach of the ceasefire agreement, warning that Israel is deliberately redrawing military boundaries to impose new realities on the ground.
“This westward expansion of the yellow line is a major violation,” Qassem said, “forcing Gaza’s population into an area reduced by nearly 30 percent, worsening already catastrophic living conditions.”
Life Under Constant Threat
Families who returned to their destroyed homes now live under constant fear, amid ongoing artillery shelling, gunfire, and drone surveillance in eastern Gaza.
Residents describe daily explosions, random shooting, and continuous destruction, leaving civilians trapped between demolished neighborhoods and militarized buffer zones.
For many, the ceasefire exists only on paper.
De Facto Annexation and the Weaponization of Reconstruction
Human rights organizations warn that Israel’s expansion of the yellow line represents de facto territorial annexation, conducted under the cover of ceasefire ambiguity and reconstruction narratives.
By destroying housing stock, infrastructure, and displacement shelters, Israeli forces appear to be engineering permanent demographic and geographic changes, undermining prospects for civilian return and recovery.
“This is not about security,” one humanitarian official said. “It is about reshaping Gaza’s geography and population distribution through force.”
A Ceasefire in Name Only
Despite diplomatic announcements and ceasefire declarations, facts on the ground point to continued military domination, structural destruction, and forced displacement.
As Gaza’s civilian population struggles to survive amid collapsed services, scarce food, and limited medical care, the expanding yellow line has become a symbol of broken promises and ongoing collective punishment.
