Gaza Herald – A new British documentary, “Breaking Ranks: Inside Israel’s War,” has exposed chilling testimonies from Israeli soldiers and officers who admit to carrying out deliberate, unjustified killings of Palestinian civilians in Gaza, revealing what experts describe as the collapse of every legal and ethical standard inside the Israeli military during its ongoing genocide.
Former tank commanders and infantry officers describe a battlefield where shooting civilians became a personal choice, not a regulated act, with commanders telling soldiers they could “fire without limits” and kill anyone who moved. Testimonies reveal that men walking alone, slowly or quickly, or even hanging laundry on a rooftop were all treated as legitimate targets, leading to deadly strikes on unarmed civilians with no military threat.
The documentary further exposes the widespread use of Palestinian civilians as human shields, including forcing children and adults into tunnels to map underground routes, a practice soldiers referred to as the “Mosquito Protocol.” These accounts directly contradict Israel’s denials and align with international investigations documenting systematic violations and acts that constitute war crimes and genocide.
The film highlights the role of extremist political and religious rhetoric in shaping soldiers’ behavior. Officers recount how statements from Israeli leaders, including claims that “all Gazans are responsible”, created a climate that normalized mass killing. Radical military rabbis were described as encouraging revenge, destruction of neighborhoods, and total disregard for Palestinian life, fueling a culture of dehumanization on the battlefield.
Witness accounts also detail Israeli soldiers shooting civilians at humanitarian aid points, crushing cars with tanks, and targeting crowds seeking food, part of a pattern the UN says has killed at least 944 civilians during aid distribution attempts. The film ends with confessions from soldiers now suffering moral collapse, admitting the genocide “destroyed any belief that the Israeli army is moral,” and exposing a military that operates with no limits, no oversight, and no regard for the laws of war.
