Gaza Herald – Israel’s Knesset passed the first reading of a bill to impose the death penalty on Palestinian prisoners accused of killing Israeli settlers on “nationalistic grounds,” with a 39 – 16 vote.
Far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir spearheaded the measure.
Human rights groups condemned the bill as racist and unlawful, warning it weaponizes the courts amid an ongoing genocidal campaign against Palestinians. The legislation still requires two more votes to become law.
Advancing capital punishment in this context further normalizes state violence: while Israel continues killings, demolitions, and siege policies, it now seeks judicial executions, tightening a regime of repression under the veneer of legislation.
