Gaza Herald- The Ministry of Health in Gaza has reported a devastating toll from the ongoing famine and malnutrition crisis: 453 individuals have died, including 150 children. Since the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) declared famine conditions in Gaza, 175 additional deaths have been recorded, with 35 of those being children.
Healthcare System on the Brink
Dr. Muhammad Abu Salmiya, Director of Shifa Hospital, sounded the alarm on the catastrophic state of Gaza’s healthcare system: “Our hospitals are overwhelmed beyond capacity. Every single day, we receive dozens of severe malnutrition cases, many of whom do not survive despite our best efforts. The shortage of essential medicines, medical equipment, and trained personnel—compounded by the unrelenting blockade—has pushed our healthcare system to the brink of total collapse.”
He added that the situation is especially dire for children and pregnant women, who are facing life-threatening complications due to malnutrition and lack of access to timely medical care. “We are witnessing preventable deaths on a daily basis. Without immediate intervention, these tragedies will continue unabated,” Dr. Abu Salmiya warned.
Deliberate Starvation Under International Scrutiny
Amnesty International has labeled Israel’s actions in Gaza as a “deliberate campaign of starvation,” based on firsthand accounts from displaced civilians who have been systematically denied access to food and medical aid. Investigations by Forensic Architecture confirm that Israel has intentionally targeted and destroyed critical food infrastructure, including bakeries and grain mills, worsening the humanitarian catastrophe.
A Humanitarian Catastrophe Unfolding in Gaza
The United Nations has raised the alarm that over half a million Palestinians are now trapped in life-threatening famine conditions, with entire families facing daily hunger and preventable deaths. Hospitals across the enclave are overwhelmed, lacking essential medicines, food, and equipment, leaving medical staff powerless to treat the most vulnerable.
The World Health Organization reports malnutrition rates soaring to unprecedented levels, with child mortality spiking as babies and young children succumb to starvation that could have been prevented.
The ongoing famine in Gaza is not a consequence of conflict but a result of a calculated and systematic policy of starvation imposed by Israel. This constitutes a form of genocide, aiming to eradicate the Palestinian population through deprivation and neglect. The international community must recognize this as a deliberate act of violence and take immediate action to end the blockade, provide humanitarian aid, and hold those responsible accountable.
