Gaza Herald- A little after eleven yesterday morning, residents in Gaza received a phone call from an Israeli occupation officer instructing them to clear out Abu Assi School, an UNRWA-run facility, along with an adjacent residential block to the west. Under the weight of escalating threats, hundreds of displaced Palestinians who had taken shelter in the school hurriedly fled, forced to abandon their few possessions. Within moments, Israeli missiles struck, turning the building into a heap of rubble and smoke.
Once a rare place of safety for uprooted families, the school now stands as yet another witness to Israel’s systematic targeting of Gaza’s civilian infrastructure. The attack highlights the ongoing violations committed under the cover of international silence and the global community’s willful neglect of international humanitarian law, which is meant to shield such facilities, especially those under the mandate of United Nations agencies.
The bombing of Abu Assi School is not an isolated incident but part of a broader and systematic assault on civilian infrastructure across Gaza. By destroying schools, hospitals, and shelters that should be protected under international law, Israel is not only targeting individuals but also dismantling the very foundations of Palestinian life.
Each demolished building tells the story of lives uprooted, rights denied, and a community forced into perpetual displacement. As long as the international community remains silent, such crimes will continue with impunity, deepening the suffering of a besieged population already enduring one of the worst humanitarian catastrophes of our time.
