Gaza Herald – The humanitarian toll of Israel’s blockade on Gaza has reached devastating levels, with doctors reporting a surge in malnutrition among children. One of the starkest cases is that of 18-month-old Ali Abu Azra, who weighs only 3 kilograms, less than a third of what is normal for his age.
Ali is currently receiving care at Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, where doctors describe his body as reduced to “skin and bones” due to chronic malnutrition. His mother, Etemad Abu Azra, said her son suffers from diarrhea, fevers, seizures, rashes, and calcium deficiency—all linked to the severe shortages of food and medicine.
“Within one week, he lost a kilogram. Now he weighs only 3kg. There is no milk, no medicine. Every day, he loses more weight from dehydration and malnutrition. He needs proper food,” she said, urging the Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization to intervene so her son can receive treatment abroad.
Dr. Ahmed al-Farra, director of the pediatric and maternity unit at Nasser Hospital, confirmed the severity of Ali’s case. “There is no fat or muscle tissue left on his body. His skin covers only his bones. He shows all the signs of severe malnutrition, sunken eyes, dehydration, calcium deficiency, and dangerous skin conditions,” he said.
Al-Farra warned that Ali is not alone. Dozens of children across Gaza hospitals are suffering similar conditions, with medical teams unable to provide adequate nutrition or care because of Israel’s restrictions on aid.
Ali’s story underscores the wider crisis unfolding in Gaza, where children are paying the highest price of war and blockade. With hospitals on the brink and food supplies blocked, the struggle to save lives continues against overwhelming odds.
