Gaza Herald- For decades, Israel has worked to control the narrative surrounding its occupation and crimes in Palestine. One of the most damaging tactics in this effort has been its ongoing attempts to silence Palestinian journalists, the very people risking their lives to document the truth in Gaza. By smearing them as “terrorists” or fabricating ties to Hamas, Israel not only tries to delegitimize their work but also sets the stage to justify targeting them, even killing them.
A recent report by the Israeli magazine +972 makes clear that this smear campaign is far from new. It explains how Israel’s practice of labeling Gazan journalists as Hamas operatives has long been one of its oldest tricks to intimidate Palestinian voices and prevent the world from fully seeing its atrocities. This campaign has coincided with a staggering toll: Palestinian journalists have been killed at a rate unmatched in modern history.
The report highlights repeated cases where Israel falsely accused Palestinian reporters of links to Hamas to strip them of credibility. It also revealed that after October 7, Israel even set up a so-called “Legitimization Cell” tasked with combing through the work of Gazan journalists, looking for any pretext to portray them as militants in disguise and justify the military’s actions in Gaza.
The deadly outcome of this policy was made painfully clear on Sunday when Al Jazeera journalist Anas al-Sharif, three of his colleagues, and two freelancers were deliberately targeted and killed by Israeli forces. Their deaths are part of a systematic effort to erase the Palestinian narrative by eliminating those who document it.
The killing of Palestinian journalists is not only an attack on individuals but also an assault on truth itself. Israel knows that cameras and words are powerful, and it fears the world seeing the human cost of its actions. By smearing, silencing, and killing Palestinian reporters, Israel attempts to bury the evidence of its crimes. Yet every fallen journalist leaves behind not silence, but a louder call for justice, reminding the world that the struggle for truth and freedom in Palestine cannot be erased.
