Gaza Herald- In a striking display of resolve, journalist Anas al-Sharif declined a rare opportunity: Israel offered him and his family safe passage out of Gaza, on the condition that he cease his reporting. Four days later, he was targeted in an airstrike.
In a video interview released Wednesday, Anas’s brother, Mohamed al-Sharif, described how Israel made “the latest” offer just before the attack. Yet Anas is quoted saying: “I will never abandon my people while they are living in this situation.” His words cut through fear and uncertainty: “Either I live to witness the end of the war or be killed. Other than that, I have no option or decision. Whatever God has destined will happen.”
Even after Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu issued statements calling for control over Gaza, Anas remained in the city to continue his coverage.
In his final message on social media platform X, Anas wrote:
“To whom it may concern, the occupation is now openly threatening a full-scale invasion of Gaza. For 22 months, the city has been bleeding under relentless bombardment from land, sea, and air. Tens of thousands have been killed, and hundreds of thousands wounded. If this madness does not end, Gaza will be reduced to ruins, its people’s voices silenced, their faces erased — and history will remember you as silent witnesses to a genocide you chose not to stop. Please share this message and tag everyone who has the power to help end this massacre. Silence is complicity.”
Threats against Anas began soon after the war started. He revealed receiving multiple phone calls from Israeli military officers demanding he stop broadcasting and vacate northern Gaza, sometimes accompanied by WhatsApp voice notes revealing his location. In December 2023, an airstrike hit his family home, killing his 90-year-old father.
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) later claimed that Anas was the “head of a Hamas terrorist cell” responsible for organizing rocket attacks on Israeli civilians and soldiers. Al Jazeera disputed these accusations, confirming his identity as “a journalist with no political affiliations” and condemned the charges as “fabricated.”
