Gaza Herald- Despite Gaza’s suffering under siege, many countries still prioritize trade with Israel over justice. Their statements call for peace, but their actions enable the ongoing slaughter.
Recently, foreign ministers from 28 countries signed a joint statement demanding an end to Israel’s war on Gaza. This gesture came months after global agencies, including the UN, had already warned of impending famine in the besieged enclave. Yet, while the ink of their signatures dries, their economic ties with Israel remain as strong as ever.
Several of these countries, such as Ireland, Spain, and France, have either recognized the State of Palestine or pledged to do so soon. But recognition, without tangible steps like sanctions or trade freezes, amounts to little more than symbolism. France, for instance, promised to recognize Palestine at the UN General Assembly this September yet it still maintains robust trade with Israel.
Trade figures from 2023 reveal the scale of this duplicity. Countries like Belgium, France, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Spain, and the UK each maintain over $1 billion in imports or exports with Israel. These include everything from integrated circuits and vaccines to perfumes and luxury vehicles. Ireland, despite its strong political stance, imports over $3.5 billion in integrated circuits alone from Israel. Italy, meanwhile, topped the export list with $3.49 billion in goods sold to Israel last year including $116 million worth of cars.
The Illusion of Solidarity
Of the 28 nations that signed the statement, at least eight have recognized Palestine, some as early as 1988, like Cyprus and Poland. Others, such as Norway and Slovenia, joined in 2024. Yet none have taken steps to sever economic or military ties with Israel. Their governments may issue condemnations, but they stop far short of any action that could curb Israeli aggression or pressure Tel Aviv to end the genocide.
These same countries, including France, Germany, and the UK, have issued joint calls for an “immediate ceasefire” and the release of hostages, while doing little to address the root cause: Israel’s suffocating siege, its bombing campaign, and its deliberate starvation of Gaza’s civilians. The effects are catastrophic. Over 59,000 people have been killed and more than 144,000 wounded. At least 133 Palestinians, including 87 children, have died from starvation deaths that could have been prevented if the world had acted sooner and with more than just words.
Tactical Pauses, Tactical Lies
Israel, predictably, rejected the joint statement, calling it “disconnected from reality” and defending its assault on Gaza as necessary. Meanwhile, under global scrutiny, it announced so-called “tactical pauses” to allow limited aid to trickle in. But even during these supposed pauses, Israeli forces killed at least 43 more Palestinians in a single day. Hunger and bombs remain the daily reality in Gaza.
It is time to confront an undeniable reality that these countries are no longer mere observers they have become complicit through their continued trade with Israel, effectively financing a system of occupation, apartheid, and grave violations of international law. True solidarity cannot be limited to diplomatic statements; it must be reflected in concrete actions, including sanctions, trade embargoes, and legal accountability. Words without action constitute complicity, if not a betrayal of fundamental human values. The people of Gaza do not need symbolic sympathy they are entitled to real justice.
