Deleted Footage Exposes Israeli Military Use of Human Shields in Gaza

Gaza Herald – In a rare and highly controversial incident, footage published by the Israeli army on its official platforms appears to directly implicate its forces in the use of Palestinian civilians as human shields during military operations in northern Gaza.

The video, which documented a raid on Kamal Adwan Hospital in Beit Lahia in October 2024, showed Israeli soldiers advancing toward the facility accompanied by a fifth individual dressed in military-style clothing but visibly unarmed. Detailed analysis later revealed that the individual was a Palestinian civilian allegedly forced to walk ahead of the troops as a human shield.

Although the footage was initially released by the Israeli military, it was later removed from official websites. However, journalists were able to retrieve and analyze the original clip, which briefly showed the civilian leading the unit before being cropped out in subsequently republished versions.

Investigations indicated that the army attempted to obscure the evidence by editing and re-uploading the video, removing frames that exposed the civilian’s presence. Despite these efforts, the original footage remained accessible on some social media platforms, allowing further scrutiny.

According to local reporting and testimonies, the incident is not isolated. A former Israeli officer reportedly acknowledged that Palestinian civilians were used as human shields multiple times daily during operations in Gaza in 2024. Separate investigative reports have also documented similar practices, including forcing detainees, sometimes elderly individuals or minors, to enter tunnels or buildings ahead of soldiers.

Additional footage previously obtained by media outlets showed detainees being dressed in military-like clothing, bound, and equipped with cameras to conduct forced reconnaissance missions in dangerous areas.

These practices, if verified, constitute serious violations of international humanitarian law, which strictly prohibits the use of civilians to shield military operations. Legal experts consider such actions potential war crimes.

The incident has added to mounting international scrutiny and may further reinforce ongoing legal proceedings related to alleged violations committed during the genocide in Gaza.
