Rafah Crossing Reopens as Medical Evacuations Resume from Gaza

Gaza Herald – The Rafah border crossing reopened on Sunday, allowing the resumption of medical evacuations from the Gaza Strip after a pause during the Eid al-Fitr holiday.

The Palestine Red Crescent Society confirmed that its teams transferred 20 civilians, including patients and their companions, from its rehabilitation hospital in Khan Younis to the Rafah crossing, where they were set to travel abroad for treatment.

The evacuation operation was carried out in coordination with the World Health Organization and relevant authorities, as part of ongoing humanitarian efforts to secure medical care for cases that cannot be treated inside Gaza’s overwhelmed healthcare system.

The resumption of evacuations comes amid mounting pressure on medical facilities in the enclave, which continue to struggle with severe shortages of supplies and limited capacity due to ongoing Israeli genocide and restrictions.

Previous closures of Rafah and other crossings had halted both medical evacuations and the entry of essential aid, worsening the already fragile humanitarian situation and leaving many patients without access to urgent treatment.

Rafah remains Gaza’s only land gateway to the outside world that does not pass through Israel. It has been operating under partial and restricted conditions since February 2026, following arrangements linked to the ceasefire agreement.
