UN Warns Over 1 Million People in Gaza Face Urgent Shelter Crisis

Gaza Herald – The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) warned Tuesday that humanitarian conditions in Gaza remain dire, with more than one million people urgently needing shelter amid widespread destruction and severe shortages of basic resources.

OCHA highlighted the need for sustainable solutions, including tools to repair damaged homes, materials to build communal heating spaces, and equipment to remove debris. Last week, UN agencies and partners reached over 7,500 families, distributing tents, plastic sheeting, insulation materials, mattresses, blankets, and winter clothing for 1,400 children.

The UN continues to provide daily bread to roughly 43% of Gaza’s population, either free or at heavily subsidized prices, alongside monthly wheat distributions benefiting 1.2 million people. Humanitarian partners also delivered cash and in-kind assistance to more than 2,300 families, while offering mental health and psychosocial support to hundreds.

Since October 7, 2023, Israeli forces, with U.S. and European support, have carried out a two-year campaign of mass killing, starvation, destruction, displacement, and arbitrary detention in Gaza, ignoring international calls and ICJ orders to halt the violence.

This campaign has resulted in over 243,000 Palestinians killed or wounded, mostly women and children, with more than 11,000 missing, hundreds of thousands displaced, widespread famine, and the near-total destruction of Gaza’s cities and neighborhoods.
