Gaza Herald_A young German journalist has publicly disclosed that she was raped while held in Israeli detention after her arrest aboard a humanitarian aid ship bound for Gaza, shedding light on what she describes as systematic abuse inside Israeli prisons.
Anna Liedtke, 25, said she was detained after Israeli forces intercepted a Freedom Flotilla vessel and subjected detainees to degrading searches during transfers between detention facilities. She says the assault occurred during these procedures.
Liedtke emphasized that she is speaking out not for personal reasons alone, but to amplify the voices of countless others who are unable to speak about the violence they endured behind prison walls.
In her testimony, she described Israeli detention centers as spaces where Palestinians are dehumanized and stripped of basic rights, stressing that silence only allows such abuses to continue.
Rejecting shame, Liedtke said exposing the truth is both a journalistic duty and a moral obligation. She accused Israeli authorities of disregarding international law and human rights conventions and described the prison system as deeply rooted in violence and patriarchy.
For her, justice goes beyond accountability for individual crimes. She defined it as ending occupation, dismantling abusive detention systems, and achieving freedom for Palestinians.
Her account has triggered international outrage, with rights groups demanding independent investigations and warning that her experience reflects a broader, documented pattern of sexual violence against detainees, including journalists.
As testimonies continue to emerge from Israeli prisons, Liedtke called on women, activists, and global communities to take action, stressing that speaking out against sexual violence is not only necessary but also revolutionary.
