Gaza Herald – Gaza’s Civil Defense said a seven-year-old child, Atta Al-Mayy, was killed after falling into a deep sewage pit in Al-Sudaniya area of northern Gaza, a zone left heavily devastated by Israeli military attacks and declared a disaster area by local authorities.
Rescue teams recovered the child’s body after nearly six hours of exhausting work, relying on rudimentary tools due to a severe shortage of equipment. Footage from the scene showed crews wading through mud and debris-filled sewage using handheld flashlights, risking their lives to reach the pit’s depth.
The incident underscored the dire humanitarian conditions in Gaza, where widespread destruction and Israel’s restrictions on equipment entry have crippled emergency response capabilities. Civil Defense crews have lost most of their vehicles and machinery to bombardment, forcing them to operate with outdated and inadequate tools.
Since October 7, 2023, Israel’s genocide on Gaza has killed more than 71,000 Palestinians, wounded over 171,000, and destroyed nearly 90 percent of civilian infrastructure. The UN estimates reconstruction costs at around $70 billion, with debris exceeding 80 million tons, turning daily survival into a deadly struggle for civilians, especially children.
