Gaza Herald_ A groundbreaking Al Jazeera investigation, produced in collaboration with Forensic Architecture, has uncovered the identities of the Israeli officers and military units responsible for the killing of six-year-old Palestinian child Hind Rajab — one of the most tragic and emblematic cases of Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza.
The episode, part of the investigative series What’s Hidden Is Greater and presented by journalist Tamer Al-Mashaal from Brussels, reconstructs the chain of evidence that links specific Israeli soldiers to the attack and follows the mounting international legal efforts seeking to bring them to trial before global courts.
A Child’s Final Plea
On January 29, 2024, six-year-old Hind Rajab was trapped inside her family’s car in the Tel al-Hawa district of Gaza City after Israeli tanks opened fire.
In her final moments, Hind made a desperate call to rescuers, whispering, “The tank is next to me.” Her plea spread across the world, symbolizing both the horror and humanity of Gaza’s suffering children.
Hours later, emergency crews reached the site , only to find the vehicle riddled with bullets. Inside lay the lifeless body of Hind beside her mother and relatives. Israel immediately denied that its forces had operated in that area.
Reconstructing the Attack
Using advanced techniques, including satellite imagery, intercepted radio communication, and 3D digital modeling, the Forensic Architecture Lab at Goldsmiths, University of London, worked with Al Jazeera to recreate the attack minute by minute.
The analysis showed that the family car was hit by 335 bullets fired from an Israeli tank just 23 meters away.
Ballistic and audio data confirmed that the fire came from a single direction, at a rate of roughly 900 rounds per second, dismantling Israel’s claim that its troops had been engaged in a firefight with Palestinian resistance fighters.
The “Vampire Empire” Unit
Investigators identified the unit responsible as part of the 401st Armored Brigade, commanded by Colonel Benny Aharon, and specifically the 52nd Battalion under Colonel Daniel Ella.
The sub-unit that carried out the killing reportedly operated under the call name “Vampire Empire”, commanded by Officer Sean Glass, a figure known for boasting that his soldiers “don’t wait for orders.”
According to the investigation, Glass not only gave the order to fire on the civilian car carrying Hind and her family but also instructed his men to target the ambulance that later attempted to reach her.
Legal Pursuit of Justice
In response to these findings, the Hind Rajab Foundation submitted a comprehensive legal complaint to the International Criminal Court (ICC), naming Sean Glass, Daniel Ella, and Itai Shukerkov, an Israeli-Argentinian dual national, as perpetrators.
A separate case was also filed against Shukerkov in Argentina, invoking the principle of universal jurisdiction for crimes against humanity.
Expanding the Investigation
The program further revealed evidence connecting other Israeli soldiers to war crimes committed across Gaza.
Among them is Shimon Zuckerman, who filmed himself detonating civilian homes in Khuza’a, near Khan Yunis. His videos have been included in a German legal case under the country’s Crimes Against Humanity Act.
Another case involves Adi Karni, captured on video planting explosives in residential buildings, and Yuval Fagdani from the Givati Brigade, who fled South America following the launch of international investigations.
According to Al Jazeera, Israel maintains an organized system designed to smuggle wanted soldiers out of countries where they may face prosecution, using private aircraft and military bases to facilitate their escape.
A Growing Network of Legal Cases
The Hind Rajab Foundation reports that more than 1,000 legal complaints have been filed globally against Israeli soldiers and commanders for crimes committed during the Gaza war.
Cases have already reached courts across Europe, Latin America, and the United States, reflecting the global scale of the demand for justice.
Conclusion: Justice Deferred, Not Denied
The killing of Hind Rajab has become a defining symbol of Gaza’s collective agony, a child’s life extinguished by a military machine that now stands exposed before the world.
While Israel continues to deny wrongdoing and evade accountability, the growing archive of forensic evidence leaves an indelible record of its crimes.
Whether the perpetrators of “Vampire Empire” ever face trial, their names and actions are now documented, etched into history as proof that even in the darkest chapters of war, truth has a way of surviving the silence.
