UN: Gaza a “Wasteland”, Heavy Machinery Needed Now to Recover Martyrs

Gaza Herald – UN humanitarian coordinator Tom Fletcher warned Monday that Gaza urgently needs heavy excavation and recovery machinery to extract victims trapped beneath mountains of rubble and to begin any credible rebuilding.

Fletcher, who inspected a ruined wastewater plant in northern Gaza City, described the area as a “wasteland” and said the scale of destruction is preventing life-saving recovery work.

For more than two years, Israel’s bombardment and shelling have shredded Gaza’s infrastructure, sanitation and water systems, schools, homes, and public facilities, leaving whole neighborhoods buried under debris.

Fletcher stressed that without cranes, bulldozers, and specialized demining equipment, rescue teams cannot safely reach thousands of martyrs or clear the way for humanitarian aid and reconstruction.

Humanitarian sources say the window to recover bodies and salvage what remains of civilian life is closing fast. The UN appeal is simple and urgent: allow immediate delivery of heavy machinery, fuel and demining teams, or accept that the human and structural cost in Gaza will become irreversible.
